How Your Mindset Can Affect Your Business

April 4, 2016 By Jessica Vaughn 1 Comment

How Your Mindset can affect Your Business

Are you stuck in the ‘Old School’ way of thinking? Changing your mindset can help you move forward in your business.

It’s true. I didn’t adopt this mindset right out of the gate. I think I started out ‘old school’. I told people to join my team and to buy a certain product. I’ve been a business owner for six years now and God has given me a different mindset.

In the ‘old school’ way of thinking you have to become a salesperson in order to be successful in your business. I talk to entrepreneurs and people who think about becoming an entrepreneur and this is their number one concern.

You don’t have to go door to door and push people to buy your products. You don’t have to push your family and friends to buy stuff. Those days are gone.

The ‘selling’ mindset limits you from moving forward.

If you have followed me for any length of time, you would know I’ve never sold you anything. I’ve only given you free gifts and encouragement and invites, but I’ve never sold you a thing.

What is the mindset you want to adopt? The answer is ‘stories’.

Stories do the ‘selling’ for you and I use the word ‘selling’ very lightly.

What happens when you tell your story?

  • You build friendships.
  • You build trust with people.
  • People can relate to you.

Either what you’ve gone through helps them with what they’re going through, or your story makes other people feel close to you.

You’ll never run out of stories. Ever. You will always be going through something.

You don’t have to make up stories. Tell your life stories. For example:

  • It could be you stub your toe and cuss and freak out.
  • Or you can tell a story about an opportunity you had.
  • Your struggles growing up.
  • Struggles you go through today.
  • You’re getting married.
  • You’ve been through a divorce.

Whatever it is, there will always be a story to tell.

I have multiple conversations every day with people who want to start a business and want to move forward, but their mindset is stopping them. They think nobody needs to hear their story. This mindset is holding them back.

People need to hear your story.

I want to encourage you to think about all the people who need to hear your story versus trying to sell a product. We have to be open and vulnerable to tell our stories in order to relate to others.

How do you sell anything?

People may argue and ask how do you not sell when you run a business. Of course there will be sales and transactions. But a lot of business may take place because you’ve read someone’s story. You may be inspired to buy something via someone because they mentioned someone else.

For example think about a movie. Your friends are probably going to determine whether or not you see a certain movie. When a new movie comes out the first thing you do is call a friend and ask if they saw it. They might reply it was a terrible movie. Now you’re not too sure you want to go and see it. You think you don’t want to waste your money if the movie is terrible.

It’s the stories we tell. They will influence someone’s opinion or influence someone as to whether or not they like you.

The second mindset to think about when starting a business.

Starting a business with the mindset that it’s an investment instead of an expense can change everything for you.

If you think starting a business is a huge expense for you and that it will drain you financially, but you still want to try and give it a go, your attitude won’t be the same if you realized it as an investment into your future.

It could be the foundation to your business. My fitness business I started six years ago has been a foundation for me. That’s it.

Since then I’ve been able to:

  • Write a book.
  • Speak on platforms.
  • Travel.
  • Open a studio in my basement and personal train.
  • And much more.

It’s an investment.

I have learned so much about myself and I’ve learned about networking and how to build a business on social media plus I meet new people all the time.

If you look at your business as an expense you may not get as much out of it as you thought you would.

Change how you view your opportunities. I want to encourage you to dream bigger and have a bigger vision. Align your vision with God’s will.

Your mindset going into a business doesn’t necessarily determine your success long term. It could be that you start out negative and not sure and then change your mindset and be totally blessed.

We need to realize that we have to move forward. We can’t depend on someone else to tell us what to do and we don’t have to sell. How amazing is that!

And remember you’re investing in your future. I want to encourage you to step out and do what God has called you to do. You are gifted and have a story to tell that someone else needs to hear.

Are you ready to change your mindset and move forward? Are you ready to tell your story? Leave a comment. I’d love to hear your story.
