First off, I want to share more of my own personal story about how I started off. Maybe you can relate and maybe you can’t, but either way, I hope it inspires you to create your own story over the years to come when you start a business.
My Senior Year
There I sat, senior year, in my newspaper writing class. I think this was actually when I started to develop a thing for writing, although I didn’t realize it at the time. I was in charge of the health and fitness section of the newspaper! Ha, would you have guessed otherwise? I used to carry around all the fitness magazines and read them. I also had a body image issue in my senior year, too. Looking back, I have been able to see how things I did back then, established who I am right now. Some good things and some bad. None the less, all have changed my life. The reason why I am telling you this particular story, is because I remember announcing and declaring to people that I was going to be on the cover of Fitness Magazine someday. I think that was the first goal I ever set for myself, even if I didn’t realize at the time that I was making goals.
Jump ahead a few years after graduating. I find myself becoming more and more into working out. I say “working out” because my eating was not healthy. Health wasn’t as important as what my body looked like on the outside at the time. My first ever workout program was Turbo Jam. I bought it on an infomercial and I think, to this day, it is the only thing I ever bought on an infomercial. This was about seven years ago or so, maybe even eight. Anyway, doing Turbo Jam ignited my passion even more than before. It was actually the reason why I started my first business. I was beginning to ignite a new fire within me and I wanted to share it with the world. Now, I am able to coach hundreds of people to start a business and to use their passion and fire to change lives, while also earning an extra income.
Here are three steps to help you get started when it comes to running a business:
1. Goals Are Needed To Start A Business
It doesn’t matter how big the goal is that you want to achieve. You can always break it down into smaller and more achievable goals. Create goals that seem more reachable to get you to the ultimate prize. I would never be where I am in life, business or even fitness, today, if I hadn’t made a goal to shoot for.
So often, I see business owners and fitness professionals miss this very key step. You must have something to aim for or you will always be aiming at nothing. You will be stuck wondering where your time has gone, and why you haven’t seen an increase in your bank account or a decrease in your waist.
Your time is now, not tomorrow. Start today with writing your goals. If you want to achieve higher success, this is a must!
- Write down 10 goals. Ten things you want to achieve, whether in business, life or even regarding vacations. One life, one list of goals.
- Circle your top goals – the ones that are most important to you right now.
- Have a notebook or binder to keep your goals and notes in! Be an excellent note taker.
2. Being Positive Will Help When You Start A Business
How pumped and excited are you? As you continue on this journey to becoming happier and running a very successful business, the next thing to conquer is FEAR. I want to talk about how fear can be the reason why you have not yet achieved the results you want!
I can’t begin to tell you how much YOU get in your own way. You have these 10 goals you wrote down, but the deeper question is: DO YOU TRULY BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE THEM? Stop comparing yourself to others. We are a work in progress. We are on our own journey. We need to realize that we have control and that fear doesn’t control us.
- What stops you from achieving your goals? What fear is paralyzing you? Things such as, “I’ll never be debt-free,” “I’ll never lose the weight,” or “I will never run a successful business.” Write your fears down.
- Scratch them off and write an overcoming statement or a positive one. For example, scratch off, “I fear I will fail,” and replace it with, “I will succeed.”
- As always, write this in your notebook.
We’ve talked about breaking down fear and realizing what is truly stopping us from achieving the great things that we have planned for our lives. Check! Now it’s time to realize what we should be saying to ourselves instead. So from here on out, no matter how strong that doubt is in your head, you need to switch it to the positive and start to reprogram your brain.
I want to talk about priorities. People say that they have them, BUT the question is do you live by them? Priorities – what are yours? Let’s be honest, when someone asks you what your priorities are, I’m sure most of us would say family, friends, faith, etc. BUT, do we live by our priorities every day or is this something that society has ingrained in us to say?
For a long time, I didn’t know what my priorities were, nor did I live by them. We say family is first, but then we pull long hours at the office. Although you may have to, and there is nothing wrong with that, it’s time to start really digging into your priorities and living by them. Everyone will have different ones and that’s OK, because we are all at different points and areas in our lives. For some, their job is their number one priority. For someone else, it’s fitness or their kids.
Today, I challenge you take fifteen to thirty minutes to write down what is truly important to you. Write out a mission statement for your life and post it up, so that you can be reminded of it every time a new opportunity comes up. You can then weigh each new opportunity or decision against your priorities. You have to make sure this new opportunity goes along with your TOP priorities. This helps build the foundation for finding BALANCE in business and life. Go on and start writing!
