“Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand,” Moses said in Exodus 17:9.
Joshua did as Moses had commanded him to do which was to choose men and go fight Amalek. Moses did as he promised which was to go up on the hill and hold his hands in the air so that Israel would prevail. (Israel only prevailed though when Moses had his hands in the air with the rod of God.)
Hands Up = Israel Prevailed
Hands Down = Amalek Prevailed
The problem with this story is that Moses was still human, with human strength. Therefore, with our human strength we get tired. Needing rest.
Exodus 17:12 tells us, “Moses’ hands became heavy; so they (Hur and Aaron) took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it.”
Knowing what was relying on the victory against Amalek, Hur and Aaron stepped in to support and be there for Moses. They didn’t stand on the sidelines during the battle they went right into battle together.
Aaron and Hur didn’t stop with just moving the rock. They also supported his hands. One was on one side and the other on the other side which helped Moses keep his hands steady until the going down of the sun.
End result? Joshua defeating Amalek.
Top Takeaway? Stop trying to do life alone.
I keep coming back to this story. Asking for help isn’t always my strong suit. My Miss Independent attitude can leave me feeling alone and isolated. I would hate for someone to have to “carry” my burdens. I don’t want someone to think less of me because of my weaknesses. Anyone else?
Two battles were going on at the same time. One with Joshua and Amalek and one with Moses and himself. (Against his own physical strength.)
Imagine what this story would look like if Moses refused the help and let his pride and ego get in the way?
- Being a superwoman is not cute anymore.
- Saying you can do it all on your own is being naïve to the bigger things God has for you.
- Not asking for help is only hindering your growth.
I don’t know if Joshua would have defeated Amalek if it wasn’t for Aaron and Hur stepping in to help Moses.
For many of us, we have been told that we won’t be able to accomplish XYZ. Or, maybe you have told yourself the same story over and over about how you are not good enough to do XYZ.
Bad news? You aren’t good enough by yourself.
Good news? You are good enough because of Jesus.
The community is us doing what Aaron and Hur did that day for Moses. Coming alongside you. One sister on one arm and one on the other to say YES you can do this. Stop giving up!
