Do you struggle with knowing what your purpose is and how you find it? Here are 20 life lessons I’ve learned so far on my journey with the Lord and finding my purpose.
The challenging suggestion I have for you today is, don’t focus on struggling to find your purpose, but focus on finding Jesus. All of us have a purpose, but realizing what it is means never give up even if you don’t know the exact route.
1. God Does Have a Plan For You
God does love you. He does have a purpose for you and He does have something very special for you to do.
2. Purpose Can Come From Pain
The stories and painful experiences that you’ve been through can really impact someone else.
3. Honor Jesus in Everything You Do
One of the ways that we can find our purpose as we find Jesus, is honoring who we are as a person and honoring Jesus in everything that we do.
If your whole life is focused on Jesus and what He says, you’ll be able to know your purpose because things are going to come naturally to you.
You might be an encourager, or a motivator, or you may be skilled with your hands. You may be able to fix things or organize things that other people don’t understand.
If we start to honor God in the things we do in general, instead of focusing on what we should be doing all the time, He’s going to direct you and guide you. He’s not going to steer you wrong.
4. You Have to Focus on Where Your Heart is Positioned as You Try to Find Your Purpose
If you’re trying to find your purpose by yourself, or if you ask other people to tell you what it is you’re good at, you can be steered and guided in the wrong direction.
5. Redirect Your Focus on Jesus
I hope this scripture encourages you, whether you’re in business, or a relationship. Your purpose can go with anything.
1 Corinthians 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them in everyone, it is the same God at work.
It’s encouraging to know that whatever you’re good at, God is behind it all.
6. God Is At Work In You
Just because you look at someone else, and you think they have a specific gift, you may begin to think, “Why don’t I have that gift?”
God is at work for you. You could be blinded to finding your purpose and the things you’re good at because you’re constantly striving to be someone else instead of who you are and looking at your own gifts and talents.
Take your focus off what everybody else does or has, or how much money they have or what they are good or not good at. Instead ask yourself, “What is it I’m passionate about?”
Our hearts are sometimes focused on the worldly things instead of focused on Jesus.
7. You Are Talented
1 Corinthians 12:4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
You are talented in many different areas. God’s going to give those gifts to you regardless. He’s going to give gifts to your neighbor and to your friends.
The same God, who is blessing your friend is still blessing you. You’re missing knowing your blessings because you’re focused on everyone else’s blessings.
8. Stay Focused On Jesus
Know that He has a special purpose and a plan for you. In order to find your purpose you need to find Jesus. You need to reach for Him more than you think possible.
Through our own work of drawing closer to God, we get to a point where we want to align what we do with what God wants. As we draw closer to Him we realize how good He is.
9. Every Single Day I Pray To Look, To Act, And To Love Like Jesus
These life lessons taught me that the more I draw close to Him, the more I can be like Him. This is my heart’s desire.
The ring I wear right now on my right hand is my purity ring. I was reborn in my purity. I never thought for one second that being pure was going to be a purpose for me. I never thought that being pure would be a platform for me to encourage women.
Women, you don’t have to give up your body and have sex with a guy in order for him to love you. I never thought encouraging women in this way was going to be a purpose for me.
10. What God Says About Our Body
As I began to draw closer to the Lord I saw in His Word what He says about me and my body. He says my body is a temple for the Lord, and how my body is a treasure and I should be valued and my heart should be treasured and valued. I never saw that coming. I didn’t think this way two and a half years ago.
11. Be Willing To Let God Use You
We have to be willing to be used by God. Sometimes it’s a scary thing to throw up your hands and ask God, “How do You want to use me today?”
He can use your hands or your words or use you to just listen to someone.
I love setting goals and envisioning and dreaming. But I don’t get stuck on a certain goal anymore because I know the vision and goal can change. Therefore, my purpose is going to change.
It depends on the season of life that you’re in. You have to be willing to be used by God in that moment. I don’t think we ever fully arrive at our purpose.
I started out as an entrepreneur. I was just turning 22 and had my first business not even knowing who Jesus was. Never in a million years did I think I would be conversing with people through live periscopes in my living room and talking about God and my purity.
No matter where you are right now, it doesn’t mean you’ll be there forever. It could be a stepping stone for you in the right direction as you allow God to work through you and in you.
Through my struggles and pain and life lessons, God has made me stronger as I encourage others.
12. His Passions And Purposes Become Ours As We Align More With God
Like I mentioned earlier with my purity ring, I never thought I would be doing what I am doing today. When I dove into His Word and had accountability to stay focused on His Word and the things that He says about me, it brought me to where I am today.
I’m in a purpose right now. I know I will always be encouraging and motivating people, but I may not be able to use periscope forever for that purpose, therefore I have to allow God to work in me and through me as changes come.
13. Ask God How He Can Use Your Pain
We’re never going to be perfect or without struggles or pain. Stop striving for perfection and let your heart be inwardly connected with God more than anything. If you can set your heart and mind on Him and focus on that perspective, you can ask Him what is this pain going to be used for. It may not sound like a happy exciting question, because pain is hard.
Maybe you’re experiencing pain today and you’re thinking you don’t want to hear how your pain has purpose. I understand. I went through the same thing.
I want to encourage you that you’re going to be stronger because of your pain and you’re going to be able to see how you can share your story with someone else and how they’re going to be able to relate to you.
This might be something you’re not even going to notice, but people are going to come to you about your similar pain.
14. Focus on What’s Ahead
We want more because we want all the details. The reason we sometimes give up on our purpose is because we want the details from beginning to end. If we don’t know those details, we throw our hands up and say,” I don’t have a purpose.”
It took about 8 months for me to come out of the transitional season of being heartbroken and lonely. It was a really long time.
It was my own decision to come out of that season. I had to open my eyes and see what I was focusing on. I don’t know what you’re going through, but sometimes it is our decision to focus on what’s ahead and what’s coming and on God, instead of on our current situation.
15. How Can You Become A Better Person?
You’re allowed to feel the pain. You’re allowed to grieve. But what are you doing? If someone hurt you, you can’t change the other person and you can’t expect the other person to change. The only thing you can do is work on yourself.
You can work on how you feel on the inside, and how you treat others. You can’t think about retaliation.
16. Seasons In Our Life Lessons
Sometimes seasons last as long as we allow them to last. We have to be willing to close and end the season, and be able to open our arms and say, “Okay, what do you have in store for me God?”
You can create the closure for people. Don’t expect people to give it to you. You can get through this season. Sometimes we can stay in a season longer than we want and sometimes it’s a decision to end that season.
17. If You Knew Everything Would You Still Trust God?
If you knew your purpose from beginning to end, would you still trust Him? Think about it. Why are you trying to find that perfect moment or time to be with Him? Why are you trying to find your perfect purpose and arriving at your destination.
Trust me. You’re never going to arrive at your destination. We never fully arrive until we’re in heaven.
If you think you’ve finally arrived at your purpose, you’ve got it all wrong. You’re going to be discouraged and think, “This isn’t everything is it?”
If you knew everything from beginning to end, would you really trust God? Would you really look to Him to be your number one if He told you everything?
18. You Will Change And Grow In Every Season Of Your Life
When you try to find your purpose you may think it will be spelled out for you. But you evolve and change as your seasons come and go.
You are going to change in so many ways if you allow the Lord to tend to your heart, to work on your heart, and to change your perspective.
19. Count Your Blessings
Instead of looking at all the burdens you have, look at all the blessings God has given you right in front of you. I know it might be hard to see or recognize, but when you focus on the blessings, you look around and see that you truly are blessed.
20. Your Purpose Is Special
I don’t believe we ever fully arrive at our purpose because we’re constantly changing. If we allow God to work on us, then our purpose is going to change.
Your purpose is unique to you. God gave you special gifts and talents to be used for His glory.
